Get a shop repair manual that covers your year and model.

While not essential, they are very useful:
Motors
Chiltons
for the appropriate years. I have an automotive and truck (think tractor as in semi) Motor's from the late 30s through mid 50s. These cover engines, starters, generators, carbs, transmissions, etc... that are used on our trucks. They have excellent chapters on basic diagnosis and tune ups. All of the recent carb and ignition questions are covered. I also have a Chilton's from the same era. I got one at a used book store and the rest I have picked up at garage sales.

I bought my parts book and shop manual from someone I found in Hemmings. Photocopiers and the postal service dominated before the internet advanced past usenet and lynx. I bought copies of the army technical bulletins from VPW I believe. I have picked up other TMs and FMs from swap meets and even downloaded a few off the internet. Back in the early 2000s the army published pdfs of their stuff on line for free. Seems recently they decided to only offer through third party distributors that all want to charge. Spend enough time on google and you'll find a free download with no registration. You will even find copies of the manuals the Army really doesn't want anyone to have.

If you have a winch I believe these two are essential:
FM 5-125 rigging manual
FM 20-22 vehicle recovery

best of luck
