Jerry, the account is accurate and occurred near Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in Goldsboro (about 50 miles from my home). This was during the period that our military constantly had armed warheads in the air in the event the Russians made a strike. If I remember correctly from articles I read, 2 airmen parachuted to safety and 3 to 5 died in the crash. They never recovered all of the components of the bomb, so the USAF bought a restrictive covenant on the farmer's cornfield that stated no excavation or construction can ever take place in that area (but it can continue to be farmed).
