A receiver consisting of a tube welded to a flat plate is a very weak design. It would be like one vertical 2x4 toe-nailed to the floor. I see the VPW one at least has the tube passing through the plate, which would help some. I don't know if that would work on your truck or not. On an M37 with the swivel mount for the pintle, it would definitely not work. If you made something like that, I think you'd do well to put a number of triangular buttress pieces between the tube and the plate to reduce the bending stress on those welds at the end of the tube. I wouldn't trust my welding to be good enough for something as important as that, but you're probably a lot better welder than I am. I think I would also want the hooks for the safety chains to be attached directly to the frame and not to any part of that receiver and pintle mount assembly.
