Two reasons;
First: Several hundred years ago it was to mimic the blue sky of a beautiful clear day when it was gloomy outside, and to brighten up the interior with the blew light tones.
Second: Bees, wasps, and other insects observed it as the sky and would not build on it, and subsequently spiders do not build their webs there either to catch their prey.
