Gmharris beat me to it but here's my take.
Even though you left the key on and Battery didn't go dead tells me that the points were open. As a result there should be no damage to the ignition system.
However I can't explain your low voltage unless your battery is weaker than you think.
Or the points were "closed" but burned themselves out before killing the battery.
I would check the points very closely.
