I'd agree that the newer Defenders are ridiculously overpriced, however, the old Series Rovers were pretty stout, excepting for the Lucas electrics! I suspect you've never crawled underneath and looked at an old one. Fully boxed frame, full-floater rear axles. They were made to carry a fair amount of weight off road. The 4 cylinder engine didn't make much power, but it would keep chugging long after you'd given up and gone home.
