I've had both on ski boats. The outboard has been less maintenance, and more reliable than the inboard. I love the sound of the inboards, but hated the constant upkeep. My outboard is a two-stroke, and its reliable. I had to have the carbs rebuilt, and that was from ethanol in the gas. The 4-stroke outboards are quieter, but I can't complain about the 20 year old 2-stroke.
