people buy the cheaper models that can't diffentate between metals. As a result you will find tons of pop tabs, and little more valuable metal, such as money, rings, etc. If you buy an expensive model which can dicriminate between a nickle,and sliver, you'll miss the nickles and pop tabs (who cares?) and get silver and gold. Use a very long thin screwdriver to tap the top of the ground which is where the coin usually is. Then you can pop it out and leave little damage to the ground. Bigest complain I've had is metal detector people leave a area full of holes in the ground, and chase you off.
