i remove the inner brass spindle bushings by using a long rod and coming in from the other side. this also will remove the seal.
this way requires the third member to be removed, but when servicing the front axle i just rebuild the complete unit. if you do it this way, be careful, there is a retaining lip that holds the inner axle seal in place. do not try to push that out. make sure the rod is only pushing on the old seal or brass bushing. a light in the third member opening helps to see thru the tubes. asking for help on the forum is a great way to get an idea of how the task is performed, but pictures and hands on guidance from an experienced pw mechanic will save untold hours of frustration and many hundreds of dollars if not thousands.
if you could get a local pw enthusiast to asssist you for a weekend you could learn a lot about general techniques used to avoid as much trouble as possible on disassembly and re-assembly. while experience is a great teacher, it is quicker to learn from someone else who has already made most of the mistakes. a smart man learns from his mistakes and a wise man learns from someone elses mistakes.
