The flap of metal on the upper shock is the cover for the access hole where you can get inside the shock to take it apart and rebuild it. I think only the earliest WDX parts manual shows a breakdown of the internal parts with numbers. Yes, you could buy rebuild parts at one time. I believe it is the W-series shop manual that goes covers in detail the rebuild process.

If the upper shock was originally a rear shock, it should have a stone guard facing forward - only taller top to bottom than that shown on the lower shock. It may have fallen off at one time as they were only spot welded on.

The lower shock looks to be a replacement with its shorter upper section and the short stone guard.
