Make sure fuel is getting into the carb. If it's easy, pop the top off the car and see that the bowl is full. If the bowl is dry, see that the float is dropping and the inlet valve is opening. Or, crack the nut on the fuel line going into the carb and see that fuel comes out while cranking. Before removing and disassembling a fuel pump, I always make sure that A) fuel is getting to its inlet, and B) no fuel is getting pumped out its outlet. Otherwise it's a waste of time to monkey with the pump.
