That is a 100 amp regulator. The armored personal carriers had them stock and the m37 had them id they were radio trucks.
That finned portion is there the carbon stack is. The way it works is the closer the carbon discs are together the lower resistance the field had less power and when tightened there was more output, when loosened more resistance and less output.
I worked on piles of them. The carbon stack also makes a real load cell for testing batteries and charging circuit out puts.
