Brake question

61 WM300. I'm replacing the front brake shoes and wheel cylinders. Old leaking cylinders made quite a wet mess, but it's all cleaned up now. On the heel post there are what the shop manual refers to as oil seals, that go on behind the shoes. They look like a fibrous material retained in a sheet metal donut. What is their purpose? Are they intended to be greased to keep the heel post lubricated?
