I have a mechanical engineering degree and am a licensed professional engineer. The one thing I can add to what has been said is keep in mind that the more specialized the field (and the more education) the more likely you will have to relocate to find the job you want. Mechanical engineering is a broad field but as soon as you start working you begin specializing. Also it is impossible to become a professional engineer without working under the supervision of one for four years and then you have to take a fairly difficult test. The sooner you take the test after college the better your odds of passing. Engineering is very useful degree and few degrees will get starting salaries that can match it. I wouldn't get to hung up on the school you attend, I think the school name is often overrated. In fact the large well known schools often have huge classes and teach more toward people going on to grad school (in other words more theory less practical).
