If you have a "check engine" light illuminated on the dash, you can borrow a cheap diagnostic tool from places like Autozone. This will allow you to read the code and clear the DTC.

Buying an expensive diagnostic tool isn't going to make sense. It's better to take it to a garage with the proper tools.

You can clear the DTC and turnoff the light by just disconnecting the battery. But, that doesn't solve anything. The light will just come back on.
