Built many power wagons and M37 trucks; both stock and with Cummins diesel power. My opinion is stick with 4.89. Reasons, it is a nice upgrade in a stock truck, definitely does not need to be any higher with a stock engine. Cutting gears in a 4.30 ratio would make them virtually useless to the stocker owners. Our Cummins trucks get a .69 over-drive in the 5-speed gear boxes we use with the Cummins. That in combination with 4.89 gearing and LT315-75R16 tires will top out between 70 - 75 MPH. The way our trucks are built, they handle nicely at those speeds. On highway top end is usually not the bigger issue though, a truck that has great off road capability along with good highway speed is the desire of most owners. 4.89's will never be noticed on the lower end gearing, but makes for much better fuel economy and great get up and go when you need it. We have built a number of M715 Jeep trucks using 4.56 gearing. I don't like all aspects of handling as well as with 4.89. Up front, the Jeeps are not nearly as good a truck as the Dodge; so that certainly comes into the mix. I won't get into that in detail here as it isn't the issue being discussed. It is just a good 4.89 / 4.56 comparison point. Depending on load and type of terrain, 4.56 can lug the engine slightly where as 4.89 is the perfect sweet zone for a Cummins with an overdrive gear box. Fine line, however 4.89 is a sure winner based on my experience. One other factor, going with a higher ring gear tooth count will result in more teeth that are thinner in physical size. Where does the need for speed start to cause thinner, weaker, teeth not to hold up under the heavy conditions for which these trucks were designed to be used? Gear sets with a too high ratio will destroy the trucks integrity; and force it into a totally different class than it was intended.
