I spent all last week cleaning up around my shop. bit by bit the junk had been encroaching and i was time to deal with it. I parted out 2 M37s, and have been to the scrappers once and have a second big load to go first thing tomorrow.
Here is the unusual part. I hired a local kid to help me out with this cleanup project. He is almost 13, but strong. His folks have horses and they hay for their own use and also sell some. Jacob is no stranger to pitching bales. The first day I had him using the weed whacker. I showed him how to put string in it and showed him where the gas can was. Her went right to work, the grass was about waist high.. From where I was working, I could not see him but I could hear the weed whacker. He kept at it, refilled the string spool, and kept right at it. After about 3 hours he came to me and said it was done. I checked it out and it was perfect. Everything I tell him to do, I tell him once, and off he goes and does it to completion. Another day, I had him mowing with a zero turn mower. He came up to me and said the belt is really loose and he assured me it wasnt broken. I checked and saw that a bolt had broken that held an idler pulley. He said "If you get me a bolt, I can fix that" Yeah, sure I thought. I got him a bolt and a couple of wrenches and let him go. Ten minutes later I hear the mower back in action. Not only did he have to bolt the pulley back on, he had to re-thread the belt back on, and there is no diagram on the tractor.
Another time I wanted to set up a run of pipe staging across the back of the shop for another project. I told him to bring the parts back there and then we would set it up. A little while later he comes and gets me. I walk around the shop and there was the staging, all set up! I was floored.
I have had adults work for me that need more supervision than he does!
I wish I could purchase him outright from his folks.
Tim
