Exactly the same pumpkins and internal parts were used front and rear.

When I found two parts trucks with factory 4.89 gears, I put the rear pumpkins in the front axles of my trucks and the front pumpkins in the rear axles, replacing the 5.83 gearing that both trucks originally had. All the bearings were good in the parts differentials and there was not any terrible wear on the rings and pinions. Then I checked the tooth contact on the backsides of the gearsets and they showed a perfect pattern when checking with prussion blue. There was also almost no visible wear - as if neither truck had ever been used hard in reverse.

So, by swapping the fronts to back and backs to front, I now have nearly new gears (at least as far as the surfaces of the teeth that are making contact when under load and traveling forward).
