the insulation on the wire is silk. Is that right Sherman? You can kind see if the insulation is burned up. But, you first have to seen a good one to compare it to.

There are two basic kinds of gas gauges, at least as far as I can tell: bi-metallic and magnetic coil. The needle on the bi-metallic gauge will float until power is applied to it. I don't know which kind is on a WC. The early 3 terminal gauges on the FFPW were bi-metallic
