A 3-wire alt makes 14.2 at battery.

And I actually run only two wires. Output wire to ammeter, red wire to battery. White wire uses the idiot light as a power source to initialize the field, but old alternators have enough residual magnetism that it is unnecessary. It just take a bit of a rev to get it fired up.

The red wire is called the 'senser'. The regulator uses it to set the voltage to 14.2 where ever it it hooked, which outh to be the battery. Hmmm, hooking it to the hot side of the electronic ignition would make sure the ign is getting 14.2? Alt might make 16, but new cars do.
