I didn't think anyone sold Hem-Fir or SPF around here. I think even Ziggy's, with its reputation for curly lumber, sells a poor grade of doug fir.

I built my garage in Everett of Hem-Fir because I started on it right when the spotted owl decision hit, coinciding with a moderate building boom, and price of decent lumber doubled overnight. Ordinary studs went from $1.50 to $3.50. I should have just spent the money, because I'm sure the decorative cuts on the ends of the rafters have all rotted off by now, but I didn't have much money. I had 2x6 rafters and 2x10 barge rafters. I did use doug fir for the roof brackets, and real plywood rather than OSB for the sheathing, but the framing was all hem-fir. It's in a place where it never dries out from October to May, and even old trucks and cars grow moss and mushrooms in a couple years.
