This truck originally came from the Wilkinson Motor Company in Salt Lake City, which was also the Auburn, Cord Duesenberg dealer in addition to the Diamond T truck dealer. Through this relationship with August Duesenberg and the Auburn company, Wilkinson provided cars and Diamond T trucks for a lot of the early land speed record and endurance record attempts at Bonneville through the 30’s and 40’s. This rare model 201 pickup was used by the Bonneville Intermountain General Tire dealership in Salt Lake City until 1965. This was truck #6 in a fleet of service trucks that expanded to 14 General Tire trucks by 1950. Trucks #1-4 were International Harvester pickups. Trucks #5 and #7-14 are unknown. The post-war tire business was booming in Salt Lake City. The Wheeler General Tire Dealership spared no expense in purchasing the top-of-the-line Diamond T 1-ton truck. This was the smallest Truck Diamond T produced and was significantly more costly than a 1-ton truck from any common brand.

Land speed record champion Ab Jenkins had been elected mayor of Salt Lake City, and Jenkins had elevated the Bonneville Salt Flats to international fame. General Tire tried to catch some of this attention with ad slogans like “Setting new records for mileage” and “The World’s Quickest Stopping Tire”.

This truck was found in a remote desert town in 2012. It still wears its 1964 license plates. The General Tire employee who drove the truck all over the state (from Wendover to Vernal and from Ogden to St. George) purchased the truck for his own use in 1965. There it saw ranch use hauling grain and fence posts on the farm and over back roads around Lyman, UT. The dry desert air preserved the truck in very good condition. There is some minor rust in the edges of the rocker panels and in the fenders where soil or salt help moisture behind the reinforcing bracket. It remains pretty much in as-found condition. It wears a set of new tires and I lightly sanded some paint off the doors to reveal the original General Tire logos. It is a great time capsule and would make a great truck.

The truck has a four speed transmission and high speed gears in the rear end, and it has the dual rear wheels, which is a rare option on the 1-ton trucks with 16” Dayton wheels. I also have an original Diamond T pickup bed in the event you are looking for a pickup rather than this custom express body.

It is under happy circumstances that I have decided to thin my fleet of collector trucks. This Diamond T must find a new home, regardless of price. The advertised price is below market for a 201 of this condition, but I will sell this truck for well below market value in order to find it a new home. All offers are welcome.
