Along these lines you mention, when I had my '52 truck at the "18 wheeler truck place",
they used an on the truck tire lathe to get the out of round corrected, then used an on the truck strobe balancer.
The results were good.
I got the impression that the big truck places use this type of balancer as it is preferred with the heavier truck wheels and tires (like our PW's have).
