I use to fly planes with mixture control and pyrometers in each exhaust. For economy reasons, we would run the engine on the lean side of peak exhaust gas temperature. Once at peak egt, any further leaning would cause the temperature to drop. We ran those engines for hours at 75% power, as I remember.

I guess you could have a situation where the right amount of leaning would occur to cause overheating, but I suspect most burned valves are caused by valves not seating properly.

I wonder if spark plugs aren't actually more sensitive to lean mixture than valves.
