His daughter said they let the franchise go back to General Motors. Franchises can be worth millions of dollars, even if the franchisee decides to retire. I suspect General Motors took back the franchise as a non-performing franchise.
General Motors doesn't care if the franchisee has enough money to store a bunch of old cars. General motors wants to see it's new cars sold and sold in a manner which benefits the company's reputation, with good service after the sales.
How much money does it take to store a bunch of old vehicles in a field? Mine aren't costing me anything. He sounds more like a hoarder who can't bear to part with anything.
