I read in the book I mentioned in my other post on the B29, that they had serious engine problems, causing many crashes especially during take off when they were powered up. The first engines just would not last. If memory serves they would overhead and start to melt components like valves, etc.
They changed the engines to a different maker and if I recall that helped a lot.
The problem was so bad they would change out engines regularly based on hours irregardless of how they performed.
Huge stockpiles of old and new engines were on the islands.
