Chris Case is correct, here in Calif. all pick-ups are registered as commercial vehicles. This was the brain storm of the Calif. state legislator to allow the DMV to extract more revenue from the pick-up driving public whether you use it for a business or not, whether you haul anything or not. I know it sucks. An additional $200 a year for any 1 ton vehicle no matter how old it is. You are exempt of this fee with historical plates. On this particular vehicle it would be unclear how the Calif. Highway Patrol would handle it driving down the road. Historical plates may get you by? But it would be exempt from crossing any scales. The drivers license and what state it is from maybe another issue. The state the tags are drawn on may also be an issue. A call to the Calif. Highway Patrol explaining what you are doing may avoid any pitfalls you may exposed to coming into the state blindly.
