Stay away from silicone. I use the original tar tape in short strips to center and hold the glass in the channel then mask the glass inside and out with masking tape as well as the outside of the channel and fill the channel with black urethane caulk, preferably hot.
Let it cure overnight then go around the joint with an exact o knife as you pull up the masking tape.
