One answer may be from page 7 of "Dodge Trucks" by Don Bunn...

"The Olds contract (3,000 transmissions in 1901) gave them (Dodge Brothers) their start in the manufacturing of auto parts, to be sure, but it was their reputation as mechanical geniuses, and as the most outstanding and able manufacturing machinists of the time, that built their reputation. It was not mere coincidence that brought Henry Ford to their doorstep.

In 1902 Henry Ford came along asking for help in making his first car; Horace redesigned Ford's engine & the brothers were offered forty shares in Ford's new company, providing they would manufacture all the engines.

On February 23, 1903, the Dodges signed a historic contract with Ford to supply 650 chassis, including engines, transmissions, and axles for $250 each. This was just the beginning of a long relationship with Ford."

Interesting bit of history.

Cheers, JB
