The lower grill section is not an optical illusion. That section is not used with the normal winch installation because the winch spool won't clear it. The WW2 1/2, 3/4, and 1 1/2 tons had two separate grills, a long one for no winch and a short one for the winch installation. Frame extensions and the two piece grill were introduced on the civilian Power Wagon.

It is not clear in the photo but that fresh paint on the frame extension looks like it goes back to a welded square plate reinforcing what may be a welded bumper extension. The correct extensions are bolted on.

The bumper appears to be a regular one-piece notched for the winch cable. The cast steel spacers that hold the angle iron should align with and match the curve of the inside ends of the bumperettes. The angle iron reinforces the two bumperettes as for a one-piece bumper. The winch cable is routed around that angle iron above the residual center section of the one-piece bumper.

There's a fairly good view of a correct winch installation on the W300M on my web site.

You may be right about the frame being side boards. I recently sold a '54 that had a look-alike bed. The runningboard mounts had been relocated on the frame to get the runningboards to meet the rear fenders. To my suspicious nature, a wooden frame to lift an incorrect bed into alignment with the cab belt line seemed possible. Still, side boards are side boards are side boards. Side boards are not a frame.

My point was that some sellers are inaccurate in their claims of correctness to justify a price. I question his assessment of the truck as being factory correct and historically accurate. He may have been told these things by the one who sold it to him. His e-bay sellers evaluation says he is good at packaging and shipping items. I have to wonder how many Power Wagons he has packaged and shipped.
