Tom:

You didnt state what engine. Seeing you have lots of ideas for a 230 (if thats what you got..) then I will throw in a couple for the V8 if you have a W series truck.

If you are just replacing the pump, and not rebuilding the engine, this is how I would do it. First off, take the new pump, fill a coffee can full of a good clean lightweight oil like 5W30 Valvoline or Mobil, the put the pump in the can and make sure it is COMPLETELY submurged. Let it set for about 15 min or more to ensure oil is getting everyware in or on the pump. Then you can take a old Dist drive shaft or screwdriver and turn it and watch to see if it 'shoots' oil out the top or side, whichever goes to the filter. if so, consider it primed. When you put it in your engine, replace oil filter and fill it with oil before installation. Then disable ignition once engine is re-assembled and turn engine over untill you can see oil pressure start to build. then go ahead and start it and see how it does.

If you had the engine out of truck for a rebuild, do all of the above PLUS this: when you get the engine back in the truck, before you try to turn it over, Get a oil pump priming tool and spin that with a power drill. That will ensure the galleries in the engine are full and will keep damage from occuring during dry start.
