Years ago I did just what you are suggesting on my 87. I bought the Chrysler dealer installable kit + all the piece parts I needed. It replaced fit in just like a factory unit replacing the existing heater and other dash parts. Took me a weekend to do it and it worked great. I also installed a Vintage Air unit under the dash in an old Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser. That only worked so-so and the engine just didn't have the power for big tires and AC. I also had problems finding the right size fan belt and getting it serviced after that. I guess where I'm going is, think it out, consider the power loss, and go with OEM parts.
