My '49 had a paper filter on it when I bought it. I had the corrrect oil bath filter
so I put it on. I like it but it requires special attention. If the gasket in the throat is damaged or missing, the thing leaks
all over and makes quite a mess. If any water gets introduced to the oil, it settles to the bottom and starts corrosion. If we're going to have snow, and the truck is going to sit,I always put a plastic shopping bag over the whole filter. Here in Wyoming, snow usually means blowing snow and that filter can get a snoot full! If you change the oil regularly, you should have no problems.
