Mounting Engine on Engine Stand

I'm getting ready to pull my 230 ci. engine and mount it on a stand for repainting and seal replacement. I am assuming I need to remove the bellhousing/clutch so that the stand will bolt up to the engine block. This is correct, isn't it? The bellhousing won't support the weight of the engine, will it? Sounds like a stupid question, but better stupid questions than stupid explanations for how my toes got flattened. I appreciate your advice.
