It can be done. I am in the midst of putting a Perkins 4.236T (same dimensions and weight) into a WC53.
I sure hope your WC is a 3/4 ton, not a 1/2 ton.
As far as transmission, with a 4 cyl Cummins you will definitely want to use an overdrive and 4.89 gears. The simplest way is to arrange the flywheel and bellhousing so it "looks like" a Dodge 6BT5.9 and use a Dodge NV4500 5 spd with 0.74 5th gear. With 37" tires you'll still be turning 2044 rpm @ 60 mph. Your top cruise speed at 2300 will be 67.5 mph.
A good place to start is to measure the distance from the back of the radiator to the front of the firewall. It should be 30.5-31.0". Your front of fan to back of block distance must be less than this, preferably with 1.5 or even 2" clearance at each end.
If you're going to all this trouble and expense it might be nice to have a 2 spd transfer case. With a NV4500 you can run a divorced NP205 with the 2WD transmission or a married NP205 with the 4WD version.
Contact me directly or call me @ home if you like. I'll give you my # if you E-mail me.
Be prepared to answer the question: "How much $$$ are you prepared to spend". If you have located a cheap source of parts by all means that's great.
