With all the time and money in new gears and gaskets I had much better control with the axle on a set of jack stands pointed straight up then trying to fight it into the housing under the truck.

I put the axle assembly on some rollers to position it under the frame and then lowered the frame till it was sitting on the axles and I could install the bolts. The lift made it easier but it should be doable with a jack too.
