I use a Oxy/Act torch to heat with. Heat the fastener enough to really melt the wax so it flows easy. Do not heat the fastener so much it turns color. If the was melts and flames, your way to hot. Let her cool a little and re-apply the candle wax. On really rusted fasteners you may need to apply heat and wax a few times. The wax will wick into the threads even upside down, but it will take more way.

I have not found any special candle wax works better than the next. Once you apply the heat and wax, you can weld a nut on the broken fastener. Just be sure to clean the melted wax off prior to welding.
