Basic questions:
Do they want it? Do they want it as a loan?
Will they display it?
Most museums have lots of stuff given to them that they don't display, and sometimes don't even really want. Loans work okay if you can work out the details with them and they will keep track of who lent it to them so that years from now after management changes, they still have some record that it's yours. A lot of museums are run pretty informally -- so much so that a general answer to your question isn't possible. It all depends on the particular museum, who runs it, how they do things, what their goals are, etc. Some will take anything you offer them, and most of it just sits in a pile, while others are very picky and insist that it be in tip-top shape and given to them with no strings attached before they will even consider it.
