I cleaned up the short joint without disassembly. After I got most of it off I just clamped it in the vice carefully and moved it around while hitting it with some brake cleaner and wiping out what I could reach. Then rince and repeat.
If I remember correctly disassembly is basically a matter of bending the joint far enough you can get one of the balls to pop loose, after that the rest is easy. But considering how tricky it is to reassemble them I would seriously suggest leaving them together if you can do it.
