Around here, the small "mom & pop" type grocery stores usually have "arm and hammer" washing soda. The big national stores don't. If they have it, it will be in the laundry aisle. You can also use baking soda. It just costs a little more is all. I have not tried lye but it should be safe if you dilute it down quite a bit.

As for amount, it doesn't much matter. It's the electricity, not the soda, that does the cleaning. The soda just makes the water conductive without making it corrosive. Somewhere in the neighborhood of a tablespoon to a quarter cup in 5 gallons of water is a good starting point. If you use too little, you will have to either crank up the voltage really high, which makes the water got hot, or wait a long time for it to get clean. If you use too much, the only problem would be if you don't have an adjustable power source and your parts are fairly large, and so it draws too much current. If that happens, just dump out half the solution and replace it with plain water and try again. There is no danger of over-cleaning and etching or pitting the metal no matter how strong the solution and the electricity. Places that stick out get cleaned a lot sooner than recesses, so if you have a part with a lot of hollows on it, you might have to leave it in for several days to get the deep spots cleaned, but nothing bad will happen to the projecting parts if you do that.
