Hi Chris,
The nut on the top sits on a thick washer, when it tightens up, it hits a shoulder above the tapered splines. I tried a second washer that had a hole larger than the diameter of the splines, to draw the spindle deeper into the steering arm. Even then, the 2 pcs did not lock together. If I go any further it locks the spindle from turning.
Starting to think that Dodge Boy is right, time to look for a replacement part.
