On I-35 in Des Moines at the Hickman Rd. exit is Living History Farms. It's well worth seeing, and it's about a minute from the Interstate.

If you're willing to detour from your route, the Iowa 80 is worth seeing (Walcott Iowa). The museum has a pretty good selection, including a Power Wagon. You can also stop by the Antique Car Museum of Iowa in Coralville-it's a worthwhile stop if you like vintage vehicles.

In Ankeny right off I-35 is the Dennis Albaugh Chevrolet collection-it's a private collection that rivals Jay Leno's, but a phone call will probably get you in so you can tour the collection. Imagine almost every Chevrolet model from about 1912 up to the 1990's. It's an outstanding collection, and there is usually an assortment of vintage cars in the parking lot.

Des Moines has a decent IMAX theater and Science Center-it may be a worthwhile visit.
