Thanks for the info. As I recall the plugs and wires were spendie indeed.
I had the same ideas as you, and have access to both the stainless braid (Tacky Autozone dress-up kit for hoses) and copper braid (silicon valley is full of surplus electronics stores) but without some effort I think it would look bad. I envision corroded copper braid with electrical tape sealing the frayed ends to the boots :| Still it may be worth it to do it regardless with the turn-key military solution coming in at $160+
