Yeah, that doesn't make sense. Why go to all that expense on the rest of the truck and then not do the hook properly. Any rigging shop could have done it for him so it would look nice and clean. Even if he doesn't care about looks, which he obviously does, this is as lousy of an attachment as one could make. Yes it should have a thimble, but more importantly it should have three crosby clips. The dead end should have been siezed down before the clips were tightened, so it doesn't stick out and snag on things. For no additional money and very little work, he could have woven a Flemish eye in the end which would have made it so strong that one clip would suffice. But the best would be to have a rigging shop put a proper socket on the end, 3' or so of chain, and then a slip hook. If he ever uses this winch, which he probably won't, the first time he wraps the cable around something, puts the hook on the cable and takes a hard pull on it, the cable will get bent and will be snarly and hard to work with from then on.
