I lost a plug first time I hit the freeway on ramp. Water pump makes 10 psi at revs, and it popped out. So I pulled the rest, they would have fallen out too. Not flattened enough.

Just smack them a good'un with a two pound hammer, flat end, until the center area is pretty flat. Pushing it in to concave will actually pull the edges inwards, making it looser. Put little sealer around the inner edge of the circumference, Permatex is better than silicone here, more permanent, won't get loose and wander into radiator.

I wouldn't use the hamburger making end of a framing hammer, unless you like 'pressed checkering', otherwise what ever makes it flat.
