The army has something to say about this. FM 5-125 on page 3-24 and 25 says only 2 degrees either side of perpendicular. If you are puling too far to the side you should reset your truck or add a pully to change directions (i wouldn't count the fair lead as your pully).
You may want to also look for FM 20-22.
Also remember rules are made just so we can break them, otherwise why bother.
