After getting the bearings off the case and case cap, drive the case cap pins into the the case. The old method to remove the case cap from the case was to put the whole case in a pan of water up to a level 1/2" below the case cap. Then you were to remove the case and bring the water to a boil, then submerge the case in the boiling water to heat the case without heating the cap. After a time submerged in the water, you were to remove the case and then attach the case to a special fixture and using a SST unscrewing the case cap from the case.
The newer method says to remove the differentail case cap lock pins by center punching and drilling them out. Then, clamp the case in a vise using brass or similar soft metal between the case and the jaws of the vise. Using a torch on the case not the cap, play the torch all around the case keeping it moving. While heating touch the case with a piece of ordinary solder from time to time. When the solder just starts to melt, the case is heated to the proper temp. Again using an SST and hammer you are to strike the handle of the SST and quickly unscrew the cap.
The Special service tool has two or three teeth like metal rods that fit in the webbing of the case cap and they force against the webbing. You can use a a large blunt punch and mall on the webbing, but in my opinion, all that will do is mess up the webbing on the case cap. In other words a real "Bubba" style of mechanical repair. You can make the tool using simple pieces of flat steel and some bolts. Mind you, I have done not this operation on my third members, but have researched it fairly well and I guess I could do it if push came to shove. Take your time like the rest of the guys say and I'm sure you will be succesful.
