How to pedal bleed the brakes?

I'm giving up on my power bleeder. I know the basics of pedal bleeding but is there anything crucial to know like how far to push the pedal down? One issue I may be having it my plunger is adjusted nearly to the absolute end of the threads for maximum travel that may be wrong.
