Jerry, I have had good luck never using the pointer. I just don't trust them. I drop a long spike down into the timing hole above #6 cylinder (with a head large enough not to fall through) and use a dial indicator off of that. I don't remember off hand how many thousands equals degrees of rotation, but I can find the information for you.
