The exhibit area is free, but you have to buy bus tour tickets to get on the actual Kennedy Space Center grounds. That's the most interesting part. No need to pay any tour group to get there. Just drive and buy bus tickets their. Beats the heck out of Disneyland if you have any interest in the space program.
It's out of your way, but if you are only going to be there once, make the drive to Key West. The drive over the keys is one of the nicest you will ever make. You will need to overnight in Key West to make it worthwhile. Make sure you are on the pier at sunset.
